Louis Koo stars as ex- Judo champion/Pub manager/band leader Sze-To, who quit the sport and became an alcoholic, degenerate gambler. After a meeting with traveling Judo fighter, Tony (Aaron Kwok) and aspiring singer, Mona (Cherrie In), Sze-To is forced to contemplate his life and finds that he once again wants to practice Judo.
Johnnie To pays homage to the great Japanese filmmaker, Akira Kurosawa with Throw Down, which is similar in content to Kurosawa’s own influential, Sanshiro Sugata. Both films are centered around the Japanese martial art, Judo, best known for its throwing and choking techniques.
